This type of casting allows for the obtaining of a solid and compact alloy structure, perfectly homogeneous and free of inclusions and porosity. This guarantees therefore the realization of sound shots resistant to wear and tear and with high mechanical strength.
In this particular method of casting, molten metal is poured into a rotating mold and then pushed against the walls thanks to centrifugal force .
Bronze applications
The most common application of centrifugal casting is the construction of compasses for cylindrical guides. The task of resisting the heavy loads exerted on the surface of the compass, particularly in applications where lack of lubrication constitutes a serious risk, proves to be extremely difficult for other types of compasses. Moreover, the same requirements also demand the use of high-quality bronze alloys, and from this point of view centrifugal casting is able to confer distinctly advantageous characteristics with regard to the structure and material properties, since for any higher composition the cooling rate is better, and hence the wear resistance improves.
